Warrawong, New South Wales

Warrawong is a suburb of the Wollongong Local Government Area, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Two meanings are given for the aboriginal word Warrawong, "a whiting" and the "side of a hill". Warrawong is home to Port Kembla regional hospital and Westfield Warrawong, one of three major local shopping centres. It is situated on the northeast corner of Lake Illawarra and on a hill ridge called Woonwongarang.

History

Long a farming area, after the first land grants were made in the area in 1815, Warrawong began to be developed as a suburb only in the 1930s. [http://www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/library/localinfo/warrawong/history.html]

Warrawong also has a significant Italian population.

Warrawong is also widely known for its Indigenous population. Warrawong has a high population of Africans and public housing.

Warrawong also is home to the infamous Five Island Court
