"Bedtime Story" is a 1964 comedy film made by Pennebaker Productions, The Lankershim Company and Universal Pictures. It was directed by Ralph Levy and produced by Stanley Shapiro with Robert Arthur as executive producer from a screenplay by Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning. The music score was by Hans J. Salter and the cinematography by Clifford Stine.

The film stars Marlon Brando, David Niven and Shirley Jones.

Plot

The action takes place on the French Riviera.

Brash Freddy Benson (Marlon Brando) is an American Army enlisted man stationed in Germany who decides to become a gigolo in the South of France. There he meets dapper Lawrence Jameson (David Niven) who is already doing the same thing but who is much more experienced and smoother than he. The two confidence tricksters work independently in their pursuit of wealthy women to fleece, but when they find themselves chasing the same prey, they reluctantly agree to pool their talents as a contest. Their target is soap heiress Janet Walker (Shirley Jones). Freddy poses as Lawrence's idiot brother Ruprecht to gain Janet's sympathy, but she turns out not to be such an easy mark.

Production

The film was remade in 1988 as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Steve Martin, Michael Caine and Glenne Headly.
