Wombarra, New South Wales

Wombarra is a small town on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. It sits in the Northern Illawarra region, south of Stanwell Park and north of Wollongong. Its main street is Lawrence Hargrave Drive. Wombarra means 'Black Duck' in Aboriginal.

The town was affected badly by the closure of the drive during the upgrade but has since returned and made a profit from the nearby Sea Cliff Bridge.

There is a local rugby league team with teams from the under 7's to the open Mens competition. They are called the Northern Suburbs Junior Rugby League Club, or more commonly known as the Bulldogs.

Wombarra has a cemetery, a Lawn Bowls club, a Catholic Church and a Train station.

The Lawn Bowls club, known as the "Bowlo" or the "Bat Cave", has become the locals' watering hole ever since the Scarborough Hotel began catering for tourists' needs instead of the thirsty community. Some of the Bowlo's most colourful characters include Klawsie, Victor Koltovski and Radical Rayboy has been known to pop his sunburnt head in for a Saturday night snig. The Bowlo has gone through many phases including pool competition, Saturday night BBQ, live music and various hippy activities.

Wombarra is also a semi-popular spot among local skaters, who come to skate the fullpipes.

On the southern side of Wombarra is The Reef and Cunji Island which is said to be haunted by the spirit of Arlo Guthrie, a mystical balding serpent who has be spotted getting shacked deep in the frof of heavy Cunji zirrels from NE swell bombs. When the reef has sand, Arlo's spirit gets buried, unable to protect the reef from hordes of punters all keen for a quick shack. Papa Yeddington does not approve.

At the north end of The Reef is a break formally know as "Jim's Left". This was named after James Loeman, a former native, decided to claim the spot for himself as he could often be spotted grazing there in 1 foot dribble when Scarborough was clearly much better. James now holds no claim to the spot as he would rather ride bikes and it is now officially know as "Arlo's Left" after Arlo Guthrie (mentioned in the above paragraph), the rightful and true owner, reclaimed the spot in James' absence.
