Shohaku Okumura was born in
Osaka, Japan in 1948. He received his education atKomazawa University inTokyo, Japan , where he studiedZen Buddhism . On December 8, 1970, Okumura was ordained as a monk atAntaiji by his teacherKosho Uchiyama , where he practiced until Uchiyama retired in 1975.Uchiyama, xvii-xxi] He then traveled to theUnited States , where he continued his Zen studies atPioneer Valley Zendo inMassachusetts until 1981. After 1981 he returned to Japan and worked on translating works by Uchiyama andDogen from Japanese to English. In addition, he has also been a teacher at the Kyoto Soto Zen Center, followed by theMinnesota Zen Meditation Center inMinneapolis, Minnesota in 1993.
