Penelope (e-mail client)

Penelope is an extension for the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client software implementing some features of Eudora.

History

On October 11, 2006, Qualcomm announced [ cite press release| url=http://www.qualcomm.com/press/releases/2006/061011_project_collaboration_mozilla.html | title=QUALCOMM Launches Project in Collaboration with Mozilla Foundation to Develop Open Source Version of Eudora Email Program | date=2006-10-11 | accessdate=2007-05-17 | publisher=Qualcomm] that development of the existing Eudora e-mail client software had ended, and that future versions of Eudora would be based on the same technology platform as Mozilla Thunderbird and be open source. The codename for this project is "Penelope."

On November 22, 2006 the first alpha version of the Penelope XPInstall extension was made available on Bugzilla. The Qualcomm Penelope developers announced on July 19, 2007, "We currently have, in house, our first actual Beta build (called Eudora 8.0.0b1). We'll probably get this posted in the next few weeks. This open-source, Thunderbird-based version has been under development since 2006, but will not be a true replacement for the current Eudora (ie., one that has similar features/capabilities) until 2008 at the earliest."
