Royal Lodge Stakes

The Royal Lodge Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres) at Ascot Racecourse, and it takes place annually in late September.

First run in 1946, the race is named after Royal Lodge, a royal residence in Windsor Great Park. The first two runnings were contested over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres). The event took place at Newbury Racecourse in 1960 and 1963, and it was open to all two-year-olds before 1987. Past winners include St. Paddy (1959), who went on to win the following year's Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes.

As part of the [http://www.breederscup.com/challenge.aspx Breeders' Cup Challenge] series, the winner of the 2008 Royal Lodge Stakes automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
