Nagari is a Municipal town in Chittoor district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a semi agrarian – semi industrialised town. A sizeable textile manufacturing industry thrives in and around Nagari. Nagari is on the Andhra Pradesh - Tamil Nadu border and about 15 km from Thiruttani.

Geography

Nagari is located at 13°20′N 79°35′E / 13.33°N 79.58°E / 13.33; 79.58.[1] It has an average elevation of 116 metres (380 feet).

The town is surrounded by hills all around with the prominent cliff popularly known as Nagari nose is conspicuous for miles around.

The Nagari a.k.a Kusasthalai river runs on the south of Nagari.

Etymology

The word Nagari is from a Tamil word "Nagaram", which means Town.

Climate

Nagari has a tropical climate with hot summers, followed by monsoons and mild winter. Summer temperatures may go up from 30 to 45 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures may be between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius. Usually summer lasts from March to July. With the advent of rainy season in July, followed by winter which lasts till the end of February.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2]

  • Nagari had a population of 24,370.
  • Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%.
  • Nagari has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 61%.
  • In Nagari, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
  • Nagari being a border town has a healthy mix of Telugu and Tamil speaking populace.

Economy

The town mainly is a market place for surrounding villagers to sell their agricultural produce. The Power loom based textile industry also contributes to the town's revenue share. The Tamil dominated areas such as Pudupet, Chintalapattadai, KVPR Pet, Ekambarakuppam and Sathrawada are the major textile manufacturing centers.

Culture

The people of Nagari speak mostly Telugu and Tamil . Like most Indians, folks of Nagari wear traditional attire like Dhoti, Lungi and Saree, although the current generation prefers modern Western attire.

The local festivals

  • Gangamma Jathara is celebrated as a major festival and usually comes up in end of August or beginning of September. The Goddess Gangamma is usually offered animal sacrifices outside the temple.
  • Aadi Kruthika is celebrated by taking Kaavadi for Lord Subramanyeswara swamy.
  • Kondachuttu for all near by temple's Utsava Moorthys. This is more like an annual town fair celebrated 2 days after Sankaranthi. Almost all the people congregate at the Kondachuttu Temple near Nagari Degree College and celebrate this day.
  • Every tuesday in between Jul-15 to Aug-15 are festival days as the devotees pray Lord Desamma, the temple 1Km drive from Nagari

Education

Nagari has a few English medium schools and many Government Schools which provide primary and secondary education. There is a Government Junior College, Highschool & a Government Degree College which offers Bachelors degrees in Arts and Sciences and affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati.

Local Temples

Sri Desamma Vari Temple is a famous temple in Nagari. Devotees visit the temple on Tuesdays to worship the goddess. The villagers had strong belief on Desamma the goddess cures their eye problems if the abhishekam water is poured into their eyes inside the sanctum sanctorum.

There is a Siva temple which is pretty old and the popular worship place.

Perumal Temple is also a very old temple, which is renovated recently & now being maintained by TTD (Tirumala Tirupai Devasthanams). The presiding deity is Kariyamanikyaswami with his consorts Bhoo Devi and Sridevi.

Another old temple in Nagari is Veerabhadra Swami temple in the intersection of Beri veedhi & Main road.

Another famous temple in KVPR Pet is Ponniyamman temple, which is also considered as a village goddess.


Towards west of NAGARI and PUDUPET a village called K.V.P.R.PET is situated. There exists a very Old Ashram called SRI SIVANANDA SWAMY ASHRAM headed by the Ashram Mataadhipathi POOJYA SRI SWAMY SARANAANANDA, a very religious monk, who knows VAASTHU, ASTROLOGY, NUMEROLOGY, PERFORMANCE OF YAGNA. POOJYA SRI SWAMY visited KAILASH (CHINA) five times, MUKTHINATH (NEPAL-POKHRA) three times and Aadhi Kailash (INDIA BORDER) two times.

Some new temples constructed a few years back are Om Sakthi Temple at the junction of main road & bypass road towards mandapam, two Hanuman Temples near Keelapattu and Kondachuttu Mandapam (though not a big temple) is also considered a sacred place where the Kondachuttu festival is performed every year after Sankranthi .

Another temple near Nagari Rly station,named Vembalagi amman and Veera Anjaneya swamy . These temples are situated on Maruthi hills.

Nearby Nagari is Bugga Agraharam which has a very old Shiva temple on the northern banks of Kusasthalai River. Sanskrit word Kusa means grass . This river is produced through Kusa by The Great Sage AGASTHIYA MAHARSI when he visited the Southern parts of India to balance the northern side at the time of LORD SIVA MARRIAGE at HIMALAYA MOUNTAIN KAILASH.

There is a powerful goddess in the village m.agaram named ANKALAPARAMESWARI TEMPLE 16km from nagari towards the Tamil Nadu.

Nagari is an assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh. There are 1,76,873 registered voters in Nagari constituency in 1999 elections.
