The tailspot lanternshark, "Etmopterus caudistigmus", is a shark of the family Dalatiidae found around New Caledonia, at depths of between 640 and 800 m. Its length is up to 31 cm.

The tailspot lanternshark is a small dark species with a black underside. The caudal peduncle is rather elongate and the tail is long with obvious photophores. The upper eyelid has a pale naked patch. Denticles are short, robust, and arranged in regular longitudinal rows. The second dorsal fin is a little larger than the first.

Reproduction is ovoviviparous.
