Alan Whiteside

Alan Walter Whiteside (born March 18, 1956) is an AIDS researcher and author. He was born in Kenya and grew up in Swaziland where he attended Waterford Kamhlaba United World College. In 1980, he received an MA in Development Economics at the University of East Anglia. In 2003 he was awarded a Doctorate of Economics (D Econ) from the University of Natal in Durban.

From 2003 to 2006 he served on the United Nations Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa.

He is Professor of Economics and Director of the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is a member of the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society and a Governor at Waterford Kamhlaba. He is also a member of the Board of the Young Heroes orphan support initiative in Swaziland. His energies are also put into working with HEARD, a group of 40 researchers, research assistants and administrative staff who focus on the health issues and the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

He has written extensively mainly on AIDS. Key books include "AIDS in the Twenty-First Century", co-authored with Professor Tony Barnett (second edition 2006) and the 2008 Oxford University Press 'HIV/AIDS A Very Short Introduction'.
