As of April, 2005, Seattle, Washington was home to five Fortune 500 companies: financial services company Washington Mutual (#131), insurance company Safeco Corporation (#285), clothing merchant Nordstrom (#294), Internet retailer Amazon.com (#303) and coffee chain Starbucks (#372).

Safeco announced an agreement to be acquired by Liberty Mutual on April 23, 2008. Washington Mutual was acquired by JPMorgan Chase on September 25, 2008.
