Thomas Affleck

Thomas Affleck

Thomas Affleck (1745 – 1795) was a cabinetmaker and prominent Pennsylvanian resident, who specialized in the production of the Chippendale style of furniture.

Early life

Affleck was born in Aberdeen, Scotland but came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 1763. His commissions included substantial pieces for Pennsylvania Governor John Penn including tables, chairs and case furniture.

American Revolution

Despite a prominent place in Pennsylvanian society, Affleck sided with Great Britain during the American Revolution and was banished to Virginia in 1777 as punishment for his Loyalist sympathies. The banishment did not affect the flow of furniture commissions, and Affleck was permitted to return to Philadelphia just seven months later.

Examples of work

Examples of Affleck's work are displayed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
