Potassium fulminate

Potassium fulminate

Potassium Fulminate, or KONC, is an inorganic salt of the fulminate ion. It only use other than chemical demonstrations is percussion caps for some early rifles. Usually prepared by reacting a potassium amalgam with mercury fulminate, [cite journal | title = Electronic Structure and Stability of the Inorganic Fulminates | author = Z. Iqbal and A. D. Yoffe | journal = Proceedings of the Royal Society of London a | volume = 302 | issue = 1468 | year = 1967 | pages = 35–49] it is much less sensitive due to the ionic bond between potassium and carbon, unlike the weaker covalent bond between mercury and carbon.
