Newcastle United Jets FC season 2006-07

Newcastle United Jets FC season 2006-07

The Newcastle United Jets 2006-07 season began with disappointment as the finalists from the inaugural year failed to win any games under coach Nick Theodorakopoulos during the preseason cup and the first phase of the A-League. Caretaker coach Gary van Egmond took over mid season, resulting in a dramatic turn around in the Jets form. The Jets managed to recover from their bad start to the season and finish third.

Influential midfielder Nick Carle was given the award of best A-League player and Goal Of The Year at the close of the season.

Both teams failed to capitalize on the few opportunities that occurred with New Zealand doing a larger amount of the attacking. Newcastle and New Zealand remained at the bottom of the table for quite some time after this game.

Round 2

----footballbox
date = 1 September, 2006 20:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague NUJ
score = 2 – 3
report = [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=17581&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430079/scoreboard.html Summary]

goals1 = Gibson goal|26|own Bridge goal|40
goals2 = Reinaldo goal|5 Okon goal|38|own Lynch goal|88
stadium = EnergyAustralia Stadium
attendance = 7,276
referee = Angelo Nardi

In keeping with tradition, the away team won again, though it was not the same domination that Queensland showed when they beat the Jets last visit to EnergyAustralia Stadium 5-0. After two own goals, one from each side, the Jets lost at the death.

Round 3

----footballbox
date= 8 September, 2006 19:30
team1 = ALeague AU
score = 5 – 1
report = [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=17613&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430083/scoreboard.html Summary]

goals1 = Fernando goal|8, goal|72 Cornthwaite goal|19 Qu goal|28 Durante goal|65|own
goals2 = Bridge goal|52
stadium = Hindmarsh Stadium
attendance = 8,785
referee = Mark Shield

Newcastle's big loss to Adelaide kick started the South Australians' season after their poor start. Nothing went right for the Jets as United scored 3 times in the first half hour with all three goals conceded from set pieces. Jets striker, Bridge, pulled one back for the Jets in the second half, his second goal in as many matches, but defender Durante scored a horrendous own goal in a forgettable night for the Novacastrians.

Round 4

----footballbox
date = 17 September, 2006 20:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague SFC
score = 2 – 2
report= [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=14994&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430089/scoreboard.html Summary]

goals1 = Corica goal|33|pen Zdrilić goal|38
goals2 = Rodriguez goal|45+1, goal|62
stadium = Aussie Stadium
attendance = 15,488
referee = Matthew Breeze

At 2-0 the Jets were dead last in the league and had conceded ten goals in four matches. Rodriguez on debut, and who had finally resolved his visa problems, salvaged a point with his brace. Scoring in both halves, Rodriguez levelled the scores just after the hour after pulling back a goal in added time during the first half. During added time in the second half, Thompson almost stole the game for the Jets but instead found the woodwork.

Round 5

----footballbox
date = 23 September 2006 19:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague CCM
score = 1 – 1
report = [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=15092&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430093/scoreboard.html Summary]
team2 = ALeague NUJ
goals1 = Hutchinson goal|12
goals2 = Griffiths goal|82
stadium = Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium
attendance = 8,439
referee = Simon Przydacz

Neither team had won coming into Round 5 and Newcastle had to again come from behind to gain a point. The Jets again almost stole the game at the death but both teams remained at the bottom of the league. Newcastle had two players sent off, the captain, Okon with a straight red and the score leveller, Griffiths deep into injury time for diving when the Jets pressed for a winner with only nine men. In a derby that featured 31 fouls the stand out player was Mariner keeper Vukovic making several excellent saves before conceding to hero turned villain Griffiths.

Round 6

----footballbox
date = 29 September 2006 20:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague NUJ
score = 0 – 3

stadium = EnergyAustralia Stadium
attendance = 7,961
referee = Matthew Breeze

Already without Okon and Griffiths, the Jets almost lost their only keeper for this clash, Kennedy, to an injury. His night didn't get any better as Newcastle conceded three goals and dropped to last position on the table, much to the disgust of the 8000 strong crowd.

Round 7

----footballbox
date = 8 October 2006 20:00 UTC+10

It was unbeaten Victory versus last placed Jets as the home side was beaten by two second half goals from Allsopp after playing well in the first stanza without result.

Round 8

----footballbox
date = 14 October, 2006 19:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague NUJ
score = 3 – 0
report = [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=15372&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430104/scoreboard.html Summary]
team2 = ALeague NZK
goals1 = North goal|72 Musialik goal|86 Rodriguez goal|93
goals2 =
stadium = EnergyAustralia Stadium
attendance = 5,725

With new coach Gary van Egmond and a full strength side, the Jets began the second leg of the three phase competition with enthusiasm and competency. Their first win of the season put them above the cross-tasman team who also only had one win along with the draw of these two sides in round one.

Round 9

----footballbox
date= 22 October 2006 17:00 UTC+10
team1 = ALeague QR
score = 0 – 1
report= [http://www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=hal_newsdisplay&id=15493&pageid=2055 Report] [http://www.a-league.com.au/Scoreboard_HAL/0000430109/scoreboard.html Summary]
team2 = ALeague NUJ
goals1 =
goals2 = Coveny goal|35
stadium = Suncorp Stadium
attendance = 16,061
referee = Peter O'Leary

In keeping with tradition, the away team won again. After a half hour of relentless pressure, the Jets would have been having nightmares of the 5-0 loss in January and of the loss at home in round two. After getting past a defender and with only the keeper to beat, the goal by Coveny changed the flow of the game and the Jets began to find space as the opposition looked flat in the midfield. The Newcastle confidence must have been high after withstanding a late charge to take the three points.

Round 10

----footballbox
date = 27 October 2006 20:00 UTC+10

score = 2 – 1

team2 = ALeague AU
goals1 = Coveny goal|26 Carle goal|89
goals2 = Veart goal|37|pen
stadium = EnergyAustralia Stadium
attendance = 10,895
referee = Matthew Breeze

The Jets earned all three points and got revenge for their round three drubbing from the Reds. Newcastle dominated possession but Adelaide continued to defend well. Bajic made six saves and defenders scrambled to cover him even when he was beaten. The Jets had 24 shots at goal and breached Bajic's net twice after many opportunities. Socceroo Harry Kewell was in attendance to watch the game.

At 1-1, 88 minutes into the match, Carl Veart had a chance to steal the game and cement second place on the ladder for Adelaide with his third spot kick of the night. The penalty was awarded after Jade North was sent off using his hands to stop a certain South Australian goal. Veart had to retake his penalty and blasted his second effort over the bar. A minute later it was the Jets who scored the winner after a superb individual counter-attacking effort by Nick Carle from the corner. The goal was later awarded Goal Of The Season.

team2 = ALeague SFC
goals1 = Brown goal|86

After conceding early in the game, a late goal by substitute Tim Brown drew the scores and the points in slippery conditions.
