nihongo|Leo Aiolia|獅子座のアイオリア|Reo no Aioria is one of the characters in Saint Seiya, a manga series authored by the manga-ka Masami Kurumada, and later adapted to anime.

Concept and creation

As Masami Kurumada uses the revered Osamu Tezuka's Star System, (A stable cast of characters which play a a different or similar role in the author's various works, sometimes with the same personality and sometimes with an entirely new one), he designed Aiolia's appearance very similar to Zaji, the main character in Raimei no Zaji, a manga that Kurumada wrote and drew years before Saint Seiya.Fact|date=January 2008

In his manga, Kurumada gave Aiolia blonde hair. In the anime adaptation, due to a relative excess of yellow tones in Kurumada's design, Aiolia's hair color was modified to light brown to achieve a better color balance and contrast.

Personality and background

Aiolia is the first Gold Saint introduced by Masami Kurumada in his manga, along with Saga disguised as the Pope, in vol.1, although their rank was revealed until later volumes. In his first appearance, Aiolia was present during the moment Pegasus Seiya was granted the Pegasus Bronze Cloth and the status of Athena's Saint.

Aiolia is shown as a reference in the Sanctuary due to his righteousness and strength. He is the young brother of Sagittarius Aiolos, considered a traitor that attempted to kill Athena when she was still a baby. Due to this, Aiolia works hard to prove his loyalty to the goddess and erase the shame his brother's actions bestwon upon them. Even during the time Aiolia thought Aiolos was a traitor, he showed immense respect toward his memory.
In some interview, Masami Kurumada stated that he intended to use Aiolia as the main character of his series, hence his early introduction in the manga, but later he decided to use Pegasus Seiya. Even so, years later, the manga Saint Seiya Episode G was released, authored under Kurumada's commission by Okada Megumu, centered on the Gold Saints and having Aiolia as the main character. This manga is placed seven years before the main story, showing Aiolia when he was still a young saint and was victim of the fake stories that tainted his brother image.
Aiolia is impetuous and has a hot spirit that incites him to action. More than once, this create some conflicts between him and the calm Aries Mu. Through the story, it is hinted that he and Virgo Shaka are close friends.
Aiolia is named after the mythical island Aiolia or Aeolia, residence of Aiolos, the god of winds.

Plot overview

The Sanctuary arc

One day, the Pope summoned Aiolia and the Scorpio Gold Saint, Milo, to his hall, and explained to them the current situation they had at hand. The Gold Cloths of Aries, Libra and Sagittarius are not in the Sanctuary. He orders Aiolia to go to Japan to find the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius, and kill Saori Kido and her renegade Bronze Saints who are currently in possession of this Cloth. As Aiolia leaves, the Pope comments that Aiolia would do this to prove his worth as a Gold Saint. When Aiolia appear in Japan, Seiya and Ophiuchus Shaina were fighting inside a hospital. However, Aiolia lifts both of them outside with telekinesis, and knocks Shaina out in one move.

In the anime, the Pope had summoned Scorpio Milo only, and Aiolia suddenly appeared, saying that he'll kill the Bronze Saints and bring the Sagittarius Cloth back (and that if the Pope chose Milo instead, he'll kill Milo). Also, he appears in front of Shaina and Seiya when they're already outside the hospital.

He then tells Seiya that he would spare him so long as Seiya tells him the location of the remaining Bronze Saints and the Gold Cloth. Seiya tells Aiolia that he would not betray his friends, and fights back. During the fight, Aiolia directs an attack on Seiya, but Shaina jumped in the way to save Seiya, critically injuring her. In his guilt, Aiolia decides to leave both alive. Before he leaves, three Silver Saints, Musca Dio, Canis Major Sirius, and Heracles Algethi appear, and mock Aiolia for his cowardice, stating that they would finish of Seiya if he is afraid to do so. Seiya, unable to fend off the three Silver Saints, was quickly defeated. However, the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius awakens, and assembles itself over Seiya.

Seiya, wearing the Gold Cloth for the first time, managed to defeat all three Silver Saints. Seeing the Gold Cloth of his brother, Aiolia tries to defeat Seiya and take the Cloth from him, but as he fought Seiya, he suddenly saw a vision of his deceased brother over Seiya, telling him that Seiya is the true protector of Athena.

Aiolia was shocked by this, and he was knocked down by Seiya's attack. Saori Kido arrives before the two could continue fighting, and explain to Aiolia that she is the true reincarnation of Athena, and that the Pope has been lying about her death 13 years ago. Aiolia swears loyalty to Athena, but is still confused by the actions of the Pope. He decides to return to Sanctuary to question the Pope himself. As he leaves, he tells Seiya that he was only knocked down by his attack because he saw the spirit of his brother Aiolos in the Cloth.

After returning to the Sanctuary, Aiolia left Shina in the care of Cassios, and went to the hall of the Pope to question him on the true nature of his brother's actions. However, the Pope ordered the Gold Saint Virgo Shaka to attack Aiolia. While the two were focused in mental combat, the Pope performed a sneak attack on Aiolia with his Illusion Emperor's Fist, allowing him to manipulate Aiolia's mind. He then gives Aiolia one more chance: to kill the Bronze Saints that entered Sanctuary as they pass through the Leo Temple which he guards.

When Seiya arrives at the Leo Temple, he sees that Aiolia is the guardian. When controlled by Saga's attack, Aiolia showed a very sadistic face. His behavior was compared to a cat playing with its victim, since he didn't killed Seiya at once, instead he was weakening his body slowly with many attacks.

Cassios arrives at the Leo Temple, and states that he would like to be the one to kill Seiya, for winning the Pegasus Cloth of him and severing his ear in the past. But he instead turns to attack Aiolia, telling Seiya that Aiolia is under manipulation from the Pope, and it is only dispelled if someone dies in front of him. Cassios then commits suicide by protecting Seiya from Aiolia's "Lightning Plasma". Realising that Aiolia is still under the power of the Pope, Seiya draws up the maximum power from his Cosmo, and manages to evade Aiolia's "Lightning Plasma" and knock him down with a "Pegasus Meteor Punch", releasing him from the Demon Emperor Fist.

At the end of the Sanctuary arc, Aiolia properly shows his respects to Saori, and states that his brother's spirit can rest in peace and his name is cleared.

Poseidon arc

After Bronze Saints have left for the battle against Poseidon, Aiolia approaches Mu and tells him that he feels as if the power of Athena is dying away, and that the Bronze Saints are in danger as well by going up against incredible odds. However, Mu tells him that under the orders of Roshi (The eldest senior Gold Saint), all the Gold Saints must remain in Sanctuary for the battle to come.

As they waited, Aiolia was eventually angered by Mu's actions, and marched off, stating that he would leave to help Seiya. Mu interrupts him and says that he would kill him if he left. Before the two could fight, the spirit of Aiolos heard their dispute, and sent the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius to protect Seiya, stopping the quarrel between Mu and Aiolia. Later the Aquarius Cloth flies off from Sanctuary to protect Hyoga in similar fashion.

The Hades arc

In the Hades arc, the Sanctuary was invaded by the fallen Gold Saints who now serve Hades. Eventually, the true Spectres appeared at the Leo Temple, demanding to pass through. Aiolia declares that none of them shall pass and that he would defeat them all. After killing some of them, Aiolia is caught by Worm Raimi's tentacles while the other Specters cross his temple.

After a quick fight against Raimi, Aiolia arrives at the Virgo temple with Aries Mu and Scorpio Milo, and is shocked to see that Saga, Camus and Shura have just killed Virgo Shaka with the "Athena Exclamation", a forbidden technique. Saga, Camus and Shura charge up another Athena Exclamation - threatening that they will do it again if anyone stands in their path, but Aiolia, Mu and Milo do the same.
The clashing powers of two "Athena Exclamation" destroy the Virgo temple apart. Eventually, the combined power of these two attacks was lifted to the sky where it exploded by the combined power of all 4 Bronze Saints (in the manga Dragon Shiryu aided Aiolia's side, sending the two attacks combined against the other trio). Athena beckons the two parties to stop fighting and come to her at the statue of Athena.

Athena tells the fallen Gold Saints that they no longer have to suffer and commits suicide (secretly invoking the 8th sense as told by Virgo Shaka in his petals he sent her).
Mu, Aiolia and Milo, after knowing the truth behind Athena and Shaka's deaths, arrive in Hades' castle, where they face Wyvern Rhadamanthys. To their shock, Rhadamanthys easily overpowers the three of them, revealing that Hades castle is under Hades' will and cosmo - all Saints have their power reduced to 1/10. He defeats all three of them easily, and throws them into the abyss to Hell.

When Seiya was cast into the Cocytus, the frozen Hell, where those who dare to defy the gods are kept, he saw Mu, Aiolia and Milo trapped in there as well, apparently dead. However, upon Athena's arrival to Hell, they were revived by her power, and broke free. The three arrived in front of the Wall of Sighs, the gateway to Elysion, with Virgo Shaka and Libra Dohko, and the group attempts to break the wall with the Libra Weapons, but fail. Eventually, they had to gather all 12 of the Gold Cloths, and sacrifice themselves to open this gateway, allowing the Bronze Saints to reach the Elysion plains - the paradise of the Gods - the true home of Hades. His armour (Cloth) is given to Phoenix Ikki to use during the battle thereafter.

Leo Aiolia in Episode G

In Saint Seiya Episode G Leo Aiolia is the protagonist of Episode G. He is a thirteen year-old Gold Saint.
In the fourth Saint Seiya movie he is killed by one of the soldiers of Lucifer and in the end he is brought back to life when all the Gold Cloths starts to shine. Aiolia also stars in the Heaven Arc Prologue, in which his soul is sealed with the other Gold Saints when they talk to the gods and say they always be loyal to Athena. Although being sealed he would encourage Ikki and Shun to fight against the angel of Artemis.

In the non-canonical his incarnation during the 18th century appeared briefly but still has not taken part in the plot and so his name is unknown. His name is expected to be revealed soon.

Power and abilities

Aiolia had mastered the 7th sense, so he is able to move at the speed of the light. It is also hinted that he achieved the 8th sense so he could awaken in Cocytos. Throughout the series, Aiolia has shown telekinetic abilities and, in the anime version, healing power through the use of his Cosmo energy.
In a fight Aiolia normally uses two techniques made of electricity. With his nihongo|Lightning Bolt|ライトニングボルト|Raitoningu boruto: Aiolia blasts the opponent with a massive energy capsule and with his nihongo|Lightning Plasma|ライトニングプラズマ|Raitoningu Purazuma (Aiolia's signature technique), Aiolia generates multiple small weak plasma energy which travel at the speed of light. If he is using the maximum power of his cosmos, the technique allows Aiolia to fire 100 billion rounds of plasma per second at his opponents. From the view of his opponent, he would see himself trapped in a net formed from rays of light.

In Saint Seiya Episode G Aiolia comments that the Lightning Bolt is a stronger attack than the Lightning Plasma because the first is single hit while the second are multiple hits. Episode G also shows two new techniques that Aiolia has never used in the original series. With the nihongo|Lightning Fang|ライトニングファング|Raitoningu Fangu Aiolia sends his Cosmo energy into the ground, then it erupts as many pillars of electricity. This technique can be used to defend himself against incoming attacks, to attack his enemies or to paralyze targets.
Aiolia's strongest attack in Episode G is the nihongo|Photon Burst|フォトンバースト|Foton Bāsuto. Although immensely strong, it demands a high amount of time to be prepared and leave Aiolia exhausted after used. It consists of three movements: "Invoke", when Aiolia expels his Cosmo energy into the area creating many orbs of photon; "Drive", when the photons are directed at his enemy, entering its body through the skin; and "Burst", when the photons explode, destroying the target inside out. Since it attacks the enemy from the inside, it negates the hardness of armors.

Cloth, constellation and Temple

Aiolias's guardian constellation is Leo, and his Gold Cloth represents it and its associated myth : the Nemean Lion, whom Heracles had to slay and skin as the first of his twelve labours.

The temple he guarded was known both in manga and the anime adaptation as ShishiKyuu, the "Temple of the Lion".

Notes

*In his manga, Kurumada gave Aiolia blonde hair. In the anime adaptation, due to a relative excess of yellow tones in Kurumada's design, Aiolia's hair color was modified to brown, to generate a better color balance and contrast.

*As revealed by Masami Kurumada in vol.12 of his manga, Aiolia became a Gold Saint at an early age. He had already been granted the Gold Saint status and the Leo Gold Cloth by the time he was 7 years old.

*Besides Aries Mu, Aiolia is the only Gold Saint whose master has been revealed by Kurumada.
