Jonathan Stewart promised he'd have a big season, and the Oregon running back got off to a good start against Stanford.

Stewart ran for 168 yards and two touchdowns, then left with a right ankle injury, as the 21st-ranked Ducks beat the Cardinal 48-10 in a Pac-10 game Saturday. Against Stanford, he had plenty of help. Dennis Dixon threw for a score and ran for another, completing 21-of-30 passes for 236 yards.

Stewart scored from a yard out to make it 10-3 for the Ducks early in the second quarter. Dixon's 15-yard scoring pass to Jaison Williams upped the lead. Stewart scored again on a 3-yard run and Paul Martinez added a 24-yard field goal to make it 27-10 at halftime. Dixon's 2-yard keeper put Oregon up 34-10 midway through the third quarter. Aaron Zagory missed a 32-yard field goal attempt that would have narrowed it, before the Ducks scored on Jeremiah Johnson's 2-yard run. Finally, Oregon blocked Zagory's 37-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter and it was scooped up by linebacker A.J. Tutele, who ran it back 72 yards for the score.

The crowd of 58,450 at Autzen was a record for an opener and the fourth-largest ever.

Oregon narrowly escaped defeat. Kicker Paul Martinez scored on a 4-yard run on a fake field goal with 4:55 left and also scored one play after Fresno State botched a blocked field goal, beating the Bulldogs 31-24.

The Ducks had a mediocre running game against the Bulldogs. Jeremiah Johnson had 14 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Stewert, who was injured in the last game against the Cardinals, made one appearance on the Bulldog 3-yard line to score.

Dennis Dixon was 33-for-36 for 240 yards for the Ducks, adding a few key scrambles as well. Jaison Williams had six catches for 106 yards, but also had some key drops.

Fresno State got the sellout crowd into a frenzy after just the first play from scrimmage when Ahijah Lane stripped the ball from receiver Jordan Kent and Dwayne Andrews recovered at the Oregon 45. That set up a 32-yard field goal from Clint Stitser that gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Johnson's 20-yard punt return set up his own 5-yard TD run late in the first quarter to make it 14-3 and his 27-yard punt return set up a 38-yard field goal by Martinez with 38 second left in the half to make it 17-10. The Bulldogs appeared to seize the momentum when Bear Pascoe blocked Martinez's 36-yard field goal attempt. But instead of letting the ball roll dead and taking possession, Fresno State's Ryan Machado tried to recover the ball. The ball squirted loose and Matt Toeaina recovered at the 5 for the Ducks. Johnson ran it in on the next play to make it 24-17.

Oregon 34, Oklahoma 33

Oregon after a 16-yard TD by Dennis Dixon trailed the Sooners 33-27 with 1:12 left. After a botched onside kick attempt which both teams claimed to recover the ruling on the field was to give Oregon the ball. Oklahoma argued that the ball had made contact with an Oregon player before it went the required 10 yards anyway, so the ball should still be theirs. The play was reviewed by Pac-10 replay official Gordon Riese. The angle Riese used did not clearly show the contact but did show that Oregon had not actually recovered the ball. Because this was not the challenge on the field, the call was not reversed. After a pass interference call on Oklahoma again had Sooners coach Bob Stoops shaking his head on the sideline, Dixon threw a 23-yard TD pass to Brian Paysinger with 46 seconds to give Oregon the lead. Oregon led 34-33. Oklahoma wasn't done yet. A squib kick was recovered by Reggie Smith for 55 yards setting Garret Hartley up for a 44-yard field goal attempt. The kick was blocked by Oregon and the fans stormed the field in the first victory ever over Oklahoma.

Dixon was the top performer 26-41, for 341 yds, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs, as well as 6 Rushes, for 34 yds, and the game winning touchdown.

Dennis Dixon threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns, Jonathan Stewart ran for 142 yards and Jaison Williams caught 10 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The defense registered six sacks and limited the once-potent Arizona State attack to 175 yards and a pair of field goals. Terry Richardson returned a kickoff 100 yards for ASU's only touchdown. The running game was there on this day. Despite being slowed by an ankle injury, Stewart gained 142 yards on 12 carries, while back-up Jeremiah Johnson rushed for 89 yards on six carries.

Using a mix of short passes and misdirection runs, Oregon marched 76 yards on nine plays on its first possession, with Dixon throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Williams. On the next series, Oregon cornerback Terrell Ward, making his first college appearance, intercepted a Carpenter pass in the end zone. Then Dixon connected with Williams again to give Oregon a 14-0 lead with three minutes to go in the first quarter. That capped an eight-play, 80-yard march. At the start of the third quarter, Jeremiah Johnson's 4-yard touchdown was quickly answered by a kickoff return for a touchdown by Terry Richardson. Finally in the fourth, the Ducks scored 17 unanswered points to close the game Ducks 48-13.

The one-loss Golden Bears of California steamrolled the Ducks on their path to victory. Quarterback Dennis Dixon, who grew up 15 miles away in San Leandro, had an awful game in front of 60 friends and family members. Taking constant hits from Cal's pass rushers, he finished 20-of-35 for 263 yards and three interceptions. He tossed two TD passes in the final 16 minutes.

On the Ducks the first play of the game, Dixon threw an interception which was recovered by Cal's Brandon Hampton. Oregon's offense repeatedly stalled until a faked field goal set up its first TD on Stewart's 3-yard plunge 1:04 before halftime. In the third quarter, Dixon completed a 29-yard pass to Jaison Williams for another touchdown.

Too little too late for the Ducks as they were trailing by 28 going into the fourth quarter. Dixon closed the game with a 20-yard touchdown pass to James Finely.

The running game was virtually non-existent with 25 yards credited to Jonathan Stewert on 19 carries and one touchdown.
