"Father of the Bride" is a 1991 comedy film starring Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams, George Newbern, Martin Short, B.D. Wong and Kieran Culkin. It is a remake of the 1950 movie of the same name. In 1995, a theatrical sequel, "Father of the Bride Part II", was released.

The film inspired a series of Hallmark commercials that featured the smiling faces of the happy couple and sneak-peeks at the backs of numerous greeting cards. This film is number 92 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies".

Plot

George Banks (Steve Martin) is an upper-middle-class owner of an athletic shoe company in San Marino, California, whose 22-year-old daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) has decided to marry a man (George Newbern) from an upper-class family from Bel-Air, despite knowing each other only three months. George can't think of what life would be like without his daughter and becomes slightly insane, although his wife (Diane Keaton) tries to make him happy for Annie. When the wedding takes place at their home, along with a foreign wedding planner named Franck (Martin Short) taking over the ceremony, George tries to handle the fact that his daughter has grown up.

oundtrack

The movie's soundtrack was scored by Alan Silvestri and was influenced by Jazz and Christmas instrumentations. The Temptations (and their performance of "My Girl") joined up Darlene Love (and her performance of "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Going to Marry"), along with several other groups and artists to add musical numbers to the movie as well.

Trivia

*The part of Annie originally went to Phoebe Cates, but she declined due to pregnancy.
*This is the second film Steve Martin and Martin Short appeared in together. Their first film together was the 1986 film ¡Three Amigos!.
*At one point in the film George says that the wedding will leave him broke and "shuffling on the side walk in a bath robe." This is a reference to another Steve Martin film, The Jerk, in which his character ends up bankrupt and wanders the streets in a robe.
*The house used for exterior shots in the movie actually does exist; although the movie states the house is located in San Marino, it is located at 843 S El Molino Avenue in neighboring Pasadena. It is a 8 bedroom, 5 bathroom, 4300 square foot mansion, worth somewhere between $2 million and $3 million in today's market.
