Paithan(audio|Paithan.ogg|pronunciation (पैठण)) formerly Pratishthana, is a city and a municipal council in Aurangabad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The city was the capital of the Sātavāhana empire of ancient India that ruled from 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD. It is one of the few inland towns named in the famous 1st century AD Greek book, Periplus Maris Erytharaei.

Paithan is located 56km south of present-day Aurangābād on the Godavari River in Maharashtra. Paithan was home of the great Maharashtrian saint Eknath, whose "samadhi" can be found there. The little town is famous for its Shrine of 'Sant Eknath' where people flock every year during the time of 'Paithan Yatra' also known as NathShashti.The town is mostly famous today for its sarees — the Paithani beautiful silk saris which sport intricately embroidered gold or silver borders. Sant Dnyaneshwar Udyan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dnyneshwar_Udyan] is famous garden developed on the lines of Mysore Garden.

Jayakwadi dam

A major dam named the "Jayakwadi dam" is located near Paithan, and is known for attracting a wide variety of resident and migratory birds. On August 9, 2006, Paithan experienced its worst flood in known history when the dam floodgates were opened because of heavy rainfall in the region. Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Paithan had a population of 34,556. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Paithan has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 60%. In Paithan, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
