People's Movement against the EU

The People's Movement against the EU ( _da. Folkebevægelsen mod EU) is an anti-European Union political association in Denmark. Unlike some other euro-sceptic organisations, their primary objective is to withdraw the country from EU and rejoin EFTA. It was founded in 1972 as a cross-party campaign platform for a 'no' vote in Denmark's referendum on EEC membership.

In the 2004 European Parliamentary Election it gained 5.2% of the national vote, electing one MEP (by gaining benefit from an electoral coalition with the June Movement).

Its MEP, Søren Søndergaard, is a member of Enhedslisten and an associate member of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left group. He replaced MEP Ole Krarup on 1 January 2007 when Krarup resigned after a traffic accident.

The People's Movement against the EU does not regard itself a political party and hence does not contest Folketing elections. While claiming to be cross-party or neutral on the traditional left/right-scale, a majority of its members are rather leftist, but members from non-socialist parties exist, e.g. the Social Liberal Party and the small georgeist liberal Justice Party. Advocating for a wide cooperation with other political forces for its aims, the movement has distanced itself from the right-wing Danish People's Party. The term "People's Movement" (another possible translation is "Popular Movement") is common in Denmark and does not hint at socialism in particular (several parties also call themselves popular parties, "folkeparti").
