WINA was founded in 1949 on 1400 kHz. In 1969, it changed to 1070 kHz in order [cite web |url=http://broadcasting.wikia.com/wiki/Chronology_of_call_letters_WINA |title=Chronology of call letters WINA |accessdate=2008-06-22] to have a channel which was allowed more broadcasting power.
During the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the station carried a "middle of the road" format, featuring soft adult contemporary music along with news, talk, and sports programming. During most of the 1980s, Pat Wilson, formerly of WRVA, was Morning Man and Program Director of WINA.
During the 1990s, the statio transitioned from "middle of the road" to a news/talk format. In the late 90s, WINA's owners, Gray Broadcasting (also owners of WQMZ), merged with Eure Communications, owned by William L. Eure Jr., owners of crosstown WCHV-AM and WWWV-FM. The combined entity became Eure Communications.
In October 2004, Charlottesville-based Eure Communcations agreed to sell WINA, along with its other stations, to
