Heyrod

Heyrod

Heyrod is a small village in Greater Manchester, north west England. It forms part of the "Stalybridge North" ward of the metropolitan borough of Tameside.

History

Unlike the rest of Stalybridge, Heyrod historically formed part of Lancashire. It became part of the municipal borough of Stalybridge in 1881. Under the Local Government Act 1888, the whole borough became part of Cheshire in 1889 and in 1974 it became part of Greater Manchester.

Hartshead power station

In 1926 Hartshead power station was opened at Heyrod. Hartshead was a coal fired station that remained in use until 1975. The power station was demolished during the 1980s, although part of the site is still used as an electrical substation. Coal was supplied to the plant from railway sidings on the opposite side of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, via an enclosed overhead conveyor belt.
