Mona Mayfair

Mona Mayfair is a fictional character in several novels by Anne Rice, including Witching Hour, Lasher, Taltos, Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle. She is the fourteenth witch of the Mayfair clan, and also the Designée of the Mayfair Legacy.^[1]

Background

She was born around 1983. She has an obsession with the Shakespearian character Ophelia. She is described as very beautiful, with flowing red hair and fair skin. Within the family she is called the "wander slut", mainly because she has made it a point to sleep with all of her numerous cousins, young and old alike. In Blood Canticle, Lestat makes her into a vampire in 2003, so she can live with her true love, Tarquin "Quinn" Blackwood, forever. She was about 20 when she was made a vampire. She gave birth to a Taltos, a species not unlike humans, but different, nonetheless. The Taltos can be birthed by witches who have great power; in the book she had sex with Michael, Rowan's husband, and unwittingly created the seed. Many of the females who have sex with Taltos bleed to death, but some witches are considered exempt. To bear the Taltos, you must be of significant supernatural strength with attributes that enhance the power, specifically double the number of chromosomes (92) as a "normal" human (46). Red hair, green eyes, and a sixth finger are considered marks of a witch. Mona was the product of inbreeding, schemed by Uncle Julien, the only male "witch" of the Mayfair clan. As it turns out, Mona is related to just about every other Mayfair in existence, as is Rowan, and they both have 92 chromosomes. Michael, a distant grandchild to Uncle Julien, also has 92 chromosomes. Therefore, any progeny from Michael and Rowan, or Michael and Mona, will be born a Taltos child.^[2]
