Gooseberry Beach

Gooseberry Beach

Gooseberry Beach is a beach located in Newport, Rhode Island off of scenic Ocean Drive. It is a private beach, but also open to the public free of charge, though there is a $15 all-day fee for parking duing the week and $20 all-day fee on the weekend. The beach is located between Bailey's Beach and Hazard's Beach, both posh, highly exclusive beaches. Gooseberry is the only public beach along Ocean Drive, and the only public beach on the eastern side of Newport. The other public beach in Newport, First Beach, is located on the northern end of Newport, bordering Middletown, Rhode Island and Second Beach or Sachuset Beach. Gooseberry itself is nestled in a sort of cove, protected by a spit of land and several large boulders roughly 75 metres offshore at high tide, no more than 50 at low tide. It has a snack hut with all the beach essentials, along with the best cheeseburger and lobster roll one could ever have, never mind at a beach. At 5:30 every night, the snack hut's outside dining area, furnished with several tables and umbrellas, is reserved for dinner. The menu is a la carte, and reservations are required; booking is necessary at least 2 weeks in advance during the summer.Members have their beach gear brought to where they wish from their bathhouse or car by "ally" boys or girls. The waveless water is guarded by two lifeguard stands on the west and central areas. For non-members Umbrella and chair rentals are available for a fee of $5 each.
