International School of Hyderabad is located in Hyderabad, capital city of Andhra Pradesh, India.

The main purpose of the school is to provide education to the transient expatriate population of Hyderabad and all others who appreciate an 'international type' of education. The International School of Hyderabad is non-profit making, where all fees paid by parents are entirely devoted to financing the standard of education provided to the children.

The elementary School accepts students between the ages of 3 and 11 years of age starting with Reception, Kindergarten 1 and 2 and Grades 1 to 5. The Secondary School incorporates Grades 6 - 10, leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Cambridge Examination at the age of 16. Grades 11 and 12 comprise of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). On successful completion of the final four years of secondary schooling, grades 9 - 12, students will be awarded with an ISH High School Certificate.

At present, the student body consists of students from 14 nationalities, including the American (29%), British (26%), Indian (14%), French (10%), Canadian (6%) and Swedish (6%). There are 99 teachers from 6 nationalities employed at ISH and there are many students there.

History

The school was initially established by a group of parents in 1972. In 1982 the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) received permission to operate a school to provide education for children of expatriates and Indians from the Ministry of foreign Affairs. It also became its major sponsor, funding the purpose-built school on the former site of the ICRISAT Staff Recreation Club in the Banjara Hills area of the city.

This site (now the primary school) comprises three buildings, the first consisting of the office and staff room, along with subject specific classrooms such as art, music and ICT. The second holds two stories of classrooms and a gymnasium. The third is the canteen. The site also has a playground, a seating area, plus a tennis/basketball/football/general sport ground.

As the student body grew in size, the campus was clearly seen as insufficient. At this point the Principal and board, along with ICRISAT made plans for developing a new site within the ICRISAT campus in Patancheru on the outskirts of Hyderabad. A plot of land was assigned and construction began. The design for this new campus was to have a "street feel" where the classrooms were like houses of a central "street". This was sadly never achieved. There would be separate primary and secondary buildings, a large gymnasium/auditorium, a canteen, and an office block along with easy access to the ICRISAT sports facilities (including a swimming pool, playing field, gym and cricket ground). The first phase - the secondary school accommodating grades 6-12 - was completed in August 2007. The canteen is currently under construction, and in the coming months the auditorium and primary school will begin construction with the plan of completion, and the shifting of the entire school to the new campus, by 2010.

ICRISAT continues to play vital role in supporting and helping to develop the school and its facilities. The formal responsibility of managing the School lies with the Director General of ICRISAT. The Director General has delegated this responsibility to the Principal and the Special Advisor to the Director General of ICRISAT for Educational Affairs. To help the Principal in managing the School, ICRISAT has formalised a system of Board of Governors to recommend policies and give advice on, budget, governance, and school development plans.
