The Chinese Elm "Ulmus parvifolia" Jacq. cultivar 'Dynasty' is a National Arboretum introduction reputed to be very fast growing "HortScience", Vol. 19, 898-899. (1984) ] .

Description

A medium-size tree rarely exceeding 13 m in height, with a spread of similar dimension producing a very rounded shape. Opinions of the tree's aesthetic merit vary; Dirr Dirr, M. A. (1998). "Manual of Woody landscape Plants". Stipes Publishing LLC, Champaign, Illinois] considered that the tree "borders on a boondoggle" whereas Warren Warren, K. (2000). The return of the elm: status of elms in the nursery industry. In: Dunn, C. P. (Ed.), "The Elms", Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston.] and Jacobsen Jacobson, A. L. (1996). "North American Landscape Trees". Ten Speed Press, Berkeley, CA.] thought the shape "good", and the foliage of decent autumn colour (the leaves turn orange-yellow).

Pests and diseases

The species and its cultivars are highly resistant, but not immune, to Dutch elm disease, and unaffected by the Elm Leaf Beetle "Xanthogaleruca luteola" [http://www.sunshinenursery.com/survey.htm] .

Cultivation

The tree is largely limited to North America, although it has been introduced to Italy.
