Following in the tradition of other body swap comedies, the film uses a high school setting to explore teenage insecurities, hopes and fears. The film stars
Samaire Armstrong as Nell Bedworth andKevin Zegers as Woody Deane. From a young age, Nell and Woody have always bickered and never seen eye to eye about anything. On a class trip to a museum, they start arguing in front of a statue ofAztec godTezcatlipoca . The statue appears to cast a spell over them, causing them to wake up in each other's body the following day.Comic mayhem ensues as Nell and Woody arrive at high school and have to try to successfully pretend to be the other person. Initially, they seem to succeed, but as Woody (now in Nell's body) gets increasingly frustrated with Nell (now in Woody's body), the two try to tarnish each other's reputation by doing all sorts of hilarious things. Among other things, Woody (in Nell's body) dresses up in very suggestive manner by wearing a very short skirt and changing her hairstyle, as well as almost sleeping with a guy so that Nell would lose her virginity. One of the many things that Nell (in Woody's body) does in retaliation is to break up with Woody's girlfriend Breanna. No-one, not even their parents, are aware of what has happened to them. This movie was filmed in
Western Technical Commercial School in Toronto, OntarioThe two eventually reach a truce after defending each other against one of the other students at school. They realize that the Aztec statue had something to do with their 'body swap'. However, they fail to return to their original bodies even after confronting the statue. Thus, they realize that they will have to help each other to prepare for two important upcoming events: Nell (in Woody's body) must learn how to play football for the college scouts that will be attending the homecoming game, while Woody (in Nell's body) must prepare for the interview at Yale university by learning how to analyze and appreciate poetry.
After spending so much time together, they become very fond of each other. Woody (in Nell's body) passes Nell's Yale interview and Nell (in Woody's body) performs brilliantly in Woody's football game, meaning that Woody can go to college. When they realize just how wonderful the other person is, the spell lifts and they return to their original bodies.
Initially, Nell thinks that Woody wants to return to his former girlfriend Breanna, even though Woody can only think of Nell. After Nell's father persuades her to attend the homecoming dance, Woody declares his love for her. The end of the film sees Nell deciding to take a year's sabbatical from Yale; she and Woody then drive off together into the distance as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Major Characters
Woody Deane: The classic popular teenage jock, who loves to play American football (making this point very strongly). He has been Nell's neighbor since they were babies, and very much enjoys harassing her even from that age. Following the events of the movie, the two of them reconcile and begin a relationship.
Nell Bedworth: A headstrong, independently minded young lady, Nell enjoys many of the fine arts. In line with her mother's wishes, she seems eager to become a success in life and devotes herself relentlessly to academic pursuits often at the expense of her social life. She is also a decidedly moral girl desiring to remain a virgin until she falls in love with a man. These facts often lead to her being the subject of mockery by her classmates. Initially she is intolerant of others, preferring instead to remain inside her own world.
Harry: Nicknamed 'the horse' due either to his surname 'Horson' or his reputedly large penis, Harry makes no bones about his desire to enjoy his teenage years. Despite having what may be regarded as a relationship with a girl named Chanel, he makes no attempt to hide his disregard for monogamy. Harry, like Woody, also plays American football and is seen taking classes in mechanics. He shares Woody's love for rap and hip-hop but seems receptive to other genres of music, if eventually dismissive.
Breanna: Woody's ex-girlfriend. She is a very snobby girl who stated that she only went out with Woody because he was on the football team. She is known as a slut and enjoys sex.
Woody's Parents: Resolutely working class, Mr. and Mrs. Dean seem happy to live a simple life. With little further education between them, Mr. Dean seems to be the bread-winner via his business selling spatulas. Like Mrs. Bedworth, Mr. Dean wants to see his offspring make a success of his life and sees a career in American football as the ideal way for Woody to get a better education than they could conventionally afford. Despite this, his does not place excessive pressure on Woody, instead showing that they will be proud of him no matter how his life progresses.
Nell's Parents: Depicted as a wealthy upper-class couple, Nell's parents are much more divided than Woody's. While Mrs. Bedworth is focused almost entirely on her daughter being successful within the expectations of modern day society, Mr. Bedworth seems to want his daughter to be happy. The friendship between Mr. Bedworth and Mr. Dean apparently fizzled out sometime prior to the film's events with Mr. Dean identifying the cause as Mrs. Bedworth thinking that they were "not their kind of people". A spark of the friendship is showed being renewed between the two fathers at the end of the film.
