John Eggar

John Eggar

John Eggar (December 1, 1916 — May 3, 1983) was an Indian-born cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler.

Eggar's career started just before the outset of the Second World War, playing for Oxford University and Hampshire during the 1938 season. However, as the Second World War reached its onset, Eggar was not able to compete professionally again until 1946.

Eggar's next cricket team was to prove to be Derbyshire, who in the prewar period had reached dizzying heights, though their immediate post-war form was to prove poor. They clawed back over the next four seasons in which Eggar played, until 1950, and, in Eggar's last professional season of 1954, finished in third place in the County Championship.

Later in his career, Eggar played one Minor Counties match for Derbyshire, before hanging up his gloves. Eggar's highest first-class score was achieved in 1949, an innings of 219, the only double-century of his career, helping him on his way to Derbyshire's highest season average from an individual batsman.

Eggar's father-in-law was John Crommelin-Brown, an Indian-born cricketer who played for Derbyshire during the 1920s.
