KFVE, also known by the brand K5 The Home Team, is the licensed broadcast affiliate of MyNetworkTV in Hawaii. Based in Honolulu, KFVE first broadcast from channel 5 in 1987, becoming the final VHF station in the market. They are also seen on channel 5 as well on Oceanic Cable. As a small-time independent, KFVE had to rely on low-budget programming and Japanese television dramas (most of which were later carried on the independent KIKU television network) through much of its early existence. That all changed in 1993, when another local station, KHNL (then a Fox affiliate) took over management of KFVE. It was the first such local market sharing organization in the country with KHNL becoming the first to own two stations. The station is currently owned by Raycom Media and has satellite feeds on all the major Hawaiian Islands to rebroadcast programs outside of metropolitan Honolulu.

History

Originally, KFVE focused on low-budget programming, such as "Hawaii 5-O" repeats. Later, under the moniker "Hawaii is Watching us Grow," KFVE focused on movies and syndicated fare. After KHNL took over oversight of KFVE in the mid-90s, coverage of University of Hawaii at Manoa athletics moved over to KFVE, which rebranded as "The Home Team."

On January 16, 1995, KFVE became an affiliate of the United Paramount Network under the name "K-5 UPN Hawaii". On December 28, 1998, the station became an affiliate of two networks with the addition of programming from The WB. Previously, The WB was carried throughout Hawaii on KWHE.

KFVE was acquired by Raycom Media on December 31, 1999.

On September 2, 2002, KFVE dropped its affiliation with UPN and became a primary WB affiliate. The station rebranded itself as "K-5, The Home Team: Hawaii's WB". In the Honolulu market, UPN programming moved to KHON and KGMB, which both carried secondary affiliations with UPN from 2002 to 2004.

In 2004, KFVE organized its own news staff to air the only newscast in the state at 9:00 PM, "K5 News at Nine", currently anchored by KHNL-TV's Stephanie Lum on weekdays along with Diane Ako and Paul Drewes on weekends.

On Monday, January 7th, 2008, KFVE launched an additional newscast airing weekdays, "K5 News at 6:30", solo anchored by Stephanie Lum.

From The WB to MyNetworkTV

On March 7, 2006, KFVE parent Raycom Media announced the station would become an affiliate of MyNetworkTV upon the shutdown of The WB in September of that year, as part of a group deal involving many of Raycom's WB and UPN affiliates. KFVE had appeared to be the leading candidate to carry The CW Television Network, the network formed from the merger of The WB and UPN, as KIKU carried most UPN programming in the late afternoon and not primetime. The CW airs on a digital subchannel of local FOX affiliate KHON-TV, as announced on October 23, 2006. [http://starbulletin.com/breaking/breaking.php?id=5032]

KFVE did not air The WB's final two weeks of primetime programming as the station switched to MyNetworkTV on September 4, 2006. However, KFVE continued to air The WB's Daytime WB and Kids' WB blocks as usual up until the network's end.

Unlike most affiliates, KFVE only uses its "My K-5 TV" logo to promote MyNetworkTV programming, in a similar vein to Grand Rapids' WXSP, which uses a variation of the MyNetworkTV logo labeled "The X" and a "MyNetworkTV WXSP" logo. The "K-5 The Home Team" logo is used at all other times, such as when promoting sitcom repeats or news.

Programming

KFVE clears all MyNetworkTV programming; however the station will occasionally pre-empt network shows in order to broadcast local sports or other special events.

Because MyNetworkTV airs just 12 hours of programming per week, syndicated programming such as talk shows, game shows, and courtroom shows makes up a vast portion of KFVE's weekday schedule (especially during the daytime). First-run shows on KFVE include "The Montel Williams Show", "Judge Hatchett", "Judge Maria Lopez", "Judge Joe Brown", "Jerry Springer" and "Steve Wilkos".

KFVE also airs off-network reruns of the shows "Scrubs", "Family Guy" and "The King of Queens", along with "Smallville" on weekends. Movies are also a regular part of KFVE's weekend afternoon schedule.

KFVE does not sign off; instead, the late night and early morning hours are filled with infomericals.

UH Sports Coverage

KFVE (K5) is also home to the most complete and comprehensive college sports package in the country, as the station showcases more than 100 University of Hawaii sports events annually. Sports covered on "K-5" include football, men's and women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and women's soccer. (KFVE will occasionally pre-empt MyNetworkTV programming until the weekends in order to broadcast these sporting events, as the station once did with shows from UPN and The WB.)

KFVE (1994-present) and sister station KHNL (1984-1993) have been the home of UH sports in the islands for over two decades.
