Ukraine in Bradford

When World War II was over many displaced Ukrainians emigrated to the UK. Due to labour shortages, especially in the textile industry, many of the new migrants came to Bradford, West Yorkshire. The Ukrainians in Bradford founded their own branch in the late 1940s, becoming a member of the Organisation of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

The community, through fund raising and contributions acquired an old church, and later it's own premises housing a bar and function rooms.

A larger premisses was required, and found on Legrams Lane. After extensive refurbishment started, the building was redeveloped to house a large bar area, a function room and a large 250+ capacity hall, outhouses included a caretakers house and a secondary hall, with several attached classrooms.

More recently work has been carried out on making the building more accessible to wheelchairs, whilst also redeveloping the kitchen, hall bar, and further adding a hard surface sports pitch.

To this day Bradford continues to host a vibrantly active community, with a Saturday Ukrainian Language School, a CYM (Ukrainian Youth Movement) and associated dance troupe- Krylati.
