Dandenong Creek

Dandenong Creek

Dandenong Creek, originally known as Narra Narrawong[1], runs from the Dandenong Ranges in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, through the urban areas of Boronia and The Basin, eventually meeting Mordialloc Creek and the manmade Patterson River. The health of the creek in these urban areas ranges from moderate to very poor and has been the focus of a number of clean-up campaigns in recent years.[2]

The creek is also the home of one of the largest remaining populations of Yarra Gum, Eucalyptus yarraensis. [3]

A bike path known as the Dandenong Creek Trail runs alongside for a significant distance. It also has an industrial wastewater course joining onto it in Bayswater known as Old Joe's creek, where a bad smell occurs.[citation needed]

Etymology

The original name for Dandenong Creek was Narra Narrawong. It is not known where the name Dandenong came from nor what it means, or even its correct spelling; other variations include: Tanjenong, Tangynon and Bangeong. In any case, the name relates at least to watercourses in general, and not to mountains or ranges, as indicated by the ong ending.[citation needed]
