January 12 , 1969 in Halifax,Nova Scotia ) is a former NHL defenceman. Chosen in the 3rd round of the1987 NHL Entry Draft (#50 overall) by theChicago Blackhawks , Russell played 10 successful seasons, almost all of which came with Chicago, though Russell did appear for theColorado Avalanche during his final campaign. A rugged stay-at-home defender, Russell was defensively proficient and physically tough - willing to drop the gloves to defend a teammate - and also a capable shot-blocker and penalty-killer. However, the physical style took its toll on his body, limiting the number of games he could appear in. Often, when he did play, he played hurt. Finally in 1999, he decided that the physical toll was too much and retired. After retiring, Russell served as an assistant coach in the QMJHL for theHalifax Mooseheads from 1999–2002, and is now Head Coach.Career statistics
