Chersky (settlement)

Chersky (Russian: Че́рский) is an urban locality (a settlement) and the administrative center of Nizhnekolymsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the Kolyma River, 1,920 kilometers (1,190 mi) east of Yakutsk. Population: 3,832 (2002 Census);^[1] 11,176 (1989 Census).^[2]

It is named after Jan Czerski, a Polish geographer who organized several expeditions in the surrounding area in the 1880s. It is served by Chersky Airport. It is a locale for much of the action in the spy novel Kolymsky Heights.
