The Corner (UVA)

The Corner (UVA)

The Corner is a collection of student shops, bookstores, cafes, and night spots on University Avenue in Charlottesville, Virginia. It is the center of student life at the University of Virginia.

Always bustling, The Corner is especially active at noon. Faculty and staff adjourn there for lunch, where they mingle with students. Patrons of the Corner's sidewalk cafes can be found spending time over a good book or simply sipping coffee and people watching. A stone's throw away from Rugby Road, the University's fraternity and sorority district, The Corner is always alive with students and townspeople frequenting its many local bars and restaurants.

The Corner name is used in the branding for local radio station WCNR.

History

The district was originally a literal corner, where the university's main entrance intersected with Three Chopt Road (now Main Street), which was the major route between Staunton and Richmond. UVa was established at a distance of a mile from Charlottesville, and was its own town, of the name of "University." A significant commercial district developed, serving the needs of university students and employees, with a railroad stop, a post office, restaurants and shops. As downtown Charlottesville developed, followed by the corridor of Route 29 North in the mid-1900s, the Corner district came to consist more of small shops and bars, losing its movie theater, post office, train depot, etc. [cite web |author=Barefoot, Coy |title=Down on the Corner |url=http://www.uvamagazine.org/site/c.esJNK1PIJrH/b.2501575/k.C0CC/Down_on_the_Corner.htm |citedate=2008-09-16 |publisher=The University of Virginia Magazine |date=2007-05-01]
