Paul (exarch)

Paul (exarch)

Paul was the exarch of Ravenna from 726 to 727.

In 727, the exarchate was in revolt against the imperial imposition of iconoclasm. The cities of the exarchate entered into alliance with the pope, other Italian cities and even the Lombards against Emperor Leo III, who first sent Eutichius and then Paul to put down the revolt.

According to John Julius Norwich, the traditional first doge of Venice, Paolo Lucio Anafesto, was a mistake for the exarch Paul, whose "magister militum" was named Marcellus, the same name as Paoluccio's reputed successor as doge, Marcellus Tegallianus.
