Bob Livingston (musician)

Bob Livingston (born Robert Lynn Livingston November 26, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas) is a singer-songwriter currently living in Austin. Livingston grew up in Lubbock where he attended Lubbock High School. He went to Texas Tech University, but left school in 1969 for Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He moved to Austin in 1971 and was one of the founders of the Lost Gonzo Band. The Lost Gonzos helped give birth to the progressive country movement and played and recorded with some of Texas’ most colorful musicians including Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Steven Fromholtz. The band made two records for MCA ("The Lost Gonzo Band" and "Thrills") and one for Capitol ("Signs of Life"). In 1992, the Gonzos released their 20th year reunion CD called "Rendezvous" followed by "Hands of Time" in 1994. Both titles were released on Austin's indie Vireo Records. In 1997 a compilation CD of the two MCA records called "Dead Armadillos" was released in England on Demon Records.

Although Livingston has continued to play and record with Texas artists like Terry Allen, Pat Green, Bobby Bridger and Jimmy Dale Gilmore, he devotes most of his time touring and promoting his solo career. In 2000, he stitched together a multi-cultural group of musicians from Texas and India called Cowboys & Indians. Based in Austin, members of Cowboys & Indians include Oliver Rajamani, Richard Bowden, Tucker Livingston, Bradley Kopp, Karen Mal, Paul Pearcy and Anu Naimpally. They play a blend of eastern and western music and lore.

Livingston has toured several foreign countries for the U.S. State Department including India, Pakistan, Africa and the Middle East. His most recent tour was through Vietnam and Thailand in January 2008. In these concerts, Livingston along with his son, Tucker Livingston, play with local indigenous musicians mixing instrumentation and insights from both east and west. Inspired by his travels in India, Livingston recorded a CD in 2004 for Vireo called "Mahatma Gandhi & Sitting Bull". In 2006, Vireo released, "Original Spirit", a compilation of songs from his solo and Lost Gonzo Band records. Livingston is currently working on a new CD of original music for release in late 2008.
