Anna Záborská

Anna Záborská (born June 7, 1948 in Zürich) is a Slovak Member of the European Parliament. She was elected on the Christian Democratic Movement ticket and sits with the European People's Party group.

On July 26, 2004 she was elected Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. This election was controversial. As a conservative Catholic politician Ms Záborská is staunchly opposed to abortion. When the European People's Party nominated her for this position, the Party of European Socialists refused to accept it as part of their seat-sharing arrangement with the EPP. With the EPP resisting the political pressure of PES, Ms Zaborska was finally elected to her current position.
