Sacred Heart Medical Center (Spokane)

Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital is a 623-bed hospital in Spokane, Washington. It is the largest hospital in Eastern Washington.

History

It was founded on December 8, 1856 by Catholic nuns, hailing from the Sisters of Providence. As such, it is the first (and largest) Providence hospital. [http://www.spokanejournal.com/spokane_id=article&sub=2996] It was moved (as well as expanded) to the South Hill upon higher demand in 1910. As hospital technology became modernized, SHMC expanded to include services such as a psychiatric ward and radiation treatment facilities by Dr. William Dittman in the 1960's. In 2003, it opened a massive children's hospital, the first and only in Eastern Washington. On November 28, 2006, SHMC completed their 200th heart transplant.

Services Include: Main Medical Center/ER, Children's Hospital, Women's Health Center, Specialized centers for Robotic Surgery, Cardiology, Neuroscience and Cancer
