Daniel Mulhern

Daniel Granholm Mulhern (born January 3, 1958) is the First Gentleman of the U.S. state of Michigan. He is married to Jennifer Granholm, the state's first female governor.

Daniel Mulhern was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Mary and Jack Mulhern and grew up in the cities of Inkster and Lathrup Village. As the oldest boy, he took care of his younger siblings. In Detroit, he attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School. While considering priesthood, he majored in and received his degree in religious studies at Yale University in 1980.

After teaching theology at Tampa Jesuit High School, he moved to New Orleans and became Executive Director of a charitable community center called "THE Center". He met his wife, Jennifer Granholm, while continuing his education at Harvard Law School and they married in 1986. Mulhern took her last name as his middle name.

After Harvard, Mulhern practiced law in Detroit. He worked for U.S. Representative Sander Levin, directed Wayne County's youth services, and founded the Mulhern Hastings Group in 1999.

Mulhern completed the October 24, 2004 Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon in 4:00:49. He was joined for the last two miles by his wife and two daughters.

In 2007, Mulhern's book was published. Everyday Leadership, Mulhern's radio show, airs weekends on the Michigan Talk Network.

He and his wife have three children: Kathryn, Cecelia, and John. His sister Mary Mulhern was elected in 2007 to the Tampa City Council.

Mulhern was one of the top high school debaters in the United States. His many victories included leading the team to first place at the prestigious New York City Debate Invitational at the Bronx High School of Science in 1975.
