He has also presented on television and radio. Along with his comedy partner, Ford Kiernan, he is best known in the United Kingdom for his appearances in "Still Game" and "Chewin' the Fat".

Personal life

Son of a chartered accountant and a teacher (Edward and Anne Hemphill, "née" Brophy), Hemphill was born in Glasgow, Scotland but left at age sixcite web | title=Scotland on Sunday | work=Doubled up | url=http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/spectrum.cfm?id=578372003 | accessdate=December 30 | accessyear=2006] , spending much of his childhood in Montreal, Canada, which has contributed to his distinctive Scottish-Canadian accent. He returned to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow where he achieved a MA Honours Degree in theatre, film and television. He is married to the actress Julie Wilson Nimmo. They have two sons; Benny in 2001 and Chevy in 2005.

Awards

Hemphill was awarded the honour of being Rector of the University of Glasgow from 2001 to 2004. Career

Hemphill has appeared in several projects. In 1990, he appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe where he was given the "So You Think You're Funny" trophy. He continued his stage work, appearing in the 1992 God Plus Support performance and in the popular 1995 "Only an Excuse?" tour. He also ventured into radio as the original presenter of football show, "Off the Ball" on BBC Radio Scotland and "The Eddie Mair Show". Also Hemphill, along with Kiernan scripted 7 episodes between 1999 and 2000 for then popular children's TV show Hububb. These were, Lullabubb, Top Of The Bubbs, Conquer Leserest, Casual-Tea, Bubb Goes Boo, 2010 A Space Bubbsy and No Go Pogo. Greg also guest starred alongside Kiernan in one episode, which he also scripted with Kiernan, Casual-Tea. However, his best known performances are alongside Ford Kiernan in the television sketch show "Chewin' the Fat" and its spin-off, "Still Game". 2008 present

Hemphill will star in Gaelic drama, "Eilbheas", where Hemphill will play Elvis set in the Western Isles. It will be shown on the launch night of BBC Alba.

"Still Game"

Hemphill is best known in Scotland for the Scottish comedy sitcom "Still Game" where he played the role of Victor McDade alongside with his comedy parther Ford Kiernan as the role as Jack Jarvis. Hemphill & Kiernan wrote all of the "Still Game" episodes (1 - 6 series). Hemphill and Kiernan have also stopped production of Still Game due to a boardroom disagreement.

"Chewin' the Fat"

Hemphill yet again starred alongside his comedy partner Ford Kiernan in the Scottish sketch show "Chewin' The Fat". He played various roles. Paul Riley & Mark Cox (who also feature in Still Game) also appear.
