Carbon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. As of 2000 the population was 20,422, and by 2005 had been estimated to have decreased to 19,437. It was named for the major coal deposits in the area. Its county seat and largest city is PriceGR|6.

The Price Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Carbon County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,485 square miles (3,845 km²), of which, 1,478 square miles (3,829 km²) of it is land and 6 square miles (16 km²) of it (0.41%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 20,422 people, 7,413 households, and 5,381 families residing in the county. The population density was 14 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 8,741 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.08% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.75% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 10.27% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 7,413 households out of which 36.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% were married couples living together, 10.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the county, the population was spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 12.30% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $34,036, and the median income for a family was $40,900. Males had a median income of $38,957 versus $21,141 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,325. About 10.00% of families and 13.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.50% of those under age 18 and 13.10% of those age 65 or over.
