Martinez Station is a union station in Martinez, California, the county seat of Contra Costa County. It is served by 44 Amtrak trains per day, including Capitol Corridor trains, San Joaquins, the California Zephyr and the Coast Starlight. (When Amtrak took over in 1971 none of its trains stopped at Martinez.) The station is served by local County Connection bus service and connecting service from Benicia Breeze, WestCAT, and Tri-Delta Transit. The station was remodeled in the late 1990s, improving its aesthetic appeal. The station includes a transit center for buses, kiss and ride areas for rides and taxis, and extensive surface level parking.

There are plans to use Measure J monies to build a ferry terminal and begin a ferry service to San Francisco from this waterfront station on the Suisun Bay/Sacramento-San Joaquin Rivers Delta of the San Francisco Bay. This would make the station a bus, ferry, and rail intermodal transit hub.[2][3]

The proposed wBART is an extension of BART service through connecting heavy DMU rail from current terminals. wBART may run through Martinez on its way to Solano County via the Benicia-Martinez Railbridge if it is extended beyond the preliminary terminal in nearby Hercules.[4]

Of the 73 California stations served by Amtrak, Martinez was the eighth-busiest in FY2010, boarding or detraining an average of about 1150 passengers daily.[1]

Transit connections

Most buses are County Connection, the main jurisdictional transit provider for this part of the county, but there is also service feeder provided Amtrak in addition to commuter service from neighboring transit jurisdictions.

County Connection

County Connection is the local transit agency and provides both local and connecting express services. Line 639 connects the station with Diablo Valley College and points between long Pacheco Road[5] and line 98X runs commuter service to Walnut Creek BART station with stops in northern Martinez along Berrellessa and Alhambra Roads, then traveling along Highway 4 to Chilpancingo Road with stops along Chilpancingo and Sunvalley Mall then continuing onto Interstate 680 to Walnut Creek.[6] Line 16 travels to Concord BART via the western edge of Martinez on Alhambra and then onto central Concord thru Monument Bl.[7] Route 18 winds through Pacheco, Morello, Muir and Contra Costa to Diablo Valley College, then continues to Pleasant Hill BART turning onto Taylor, Gregory, and Buskirk.[7] The 19 takes a direct route to Concord along Pacheco and Contra Costa before winding through neighborhoods of downtown Concord along Galaxy and Concord to the Concord BART.[7] The 28 links the station with North Concord/Martinez BART weaving through central Martinez via Howe then onto the VA and Kaiser Hospitals in southern Martinez before turning onto Muir and Industrial Parkway near Clyde to the BART.[7] The 316 provides weekend service to Pleasant Hill BART combining the most popular portions of many of the other routes.[8]

Feeder and commuter service

There is Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach service to Vallejo, Napa, Santa Rosa, and Eureka along route 7.[9]

WestCat provides commute service on route 30Z to El Cerrito del Norte BART station with stops in northern Martinez along Alhambra Road to Martinez VA Hospital, then traveling along Highway 4 to Hercules Transit Center where it becomes interlined with route JPX and then south along Interstate 80 to del Norte BART in El Cerrito.[10]

Tri-Delta Transit runs route 200 from the station to the Martinez VA Hospital and Kaiser Hospital to East County running express service along highway 4 to the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station in Bay Point.[11]
