Paul Holland (born 8 July 1973 in Lincoln) is a former English footballer who made over 300 appearances in the Football League for Mansfield Town, Sheffield United, Chesterfield and Bristol City and was capped four times for the England U21s.cite web| url=http://www.thefa.com/England/U21s/Players/Postings/2005/01/AllTime_Caps.htm|title=England Under-21 Caps|publisher=The Football Association|accessdate=2008-07-16] He is a former manager of Mansfield Town.

Career

As a player, Holland was a combative midfielder. He began his career with the Stags, and later played for Sheffield United, Chesterfield and Bristol City. He suffered a serious knee injury during a match in September 2000 and then a stress fracture of the kneecap in May 2001.cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/934097.stm|title=Holland facing lay-off|date=2000-09-20|publisher=BBC sport|accessdate=2008-07-16] cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/bristol_city/1347246.stm|title=Holland to miss start of season|date=2001-05-23|publisher=BBC sport|accessdate=2008-07-16] He retired from playing and returned to Mansfield as youth team coach in January 2002.cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/mansfield_town/1779840.stm| title=Holland in Stags return|date=2002-01-24|publisher=BBC Sport|accessdate=2008-07-16]

He served as the Stags' assistant manager under Peter Shirtliff. When Shirtliff was dismissed in December 2006 following a run of poor results, Holland was made caretaker manager.cite news|title=Shirtliff dismissed|date=2006-12-20|publisher=The Times (London)|pages=76] He reverted back to assistant manager when Billy Dearden was appointed manager nine days later.cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/mansfield_town/6214427.stm|title=Dearden named Mansfield manager|date=2006-12-28|publisher=BBC Sport|accessdate=2008-07-16] When Dearden left the club in March 2008, Holland was again appointed caretaker manager.cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/mansfield_town/7286638.stm|title=Stags hand Holland temporary role |date=2008-03-09|publisher=BBC Sport|accessdate=2008-07-16] After four matches, he was given the opportunity by the board at Mansfield to stay as manager until the end of the 2007–2008 season, with Stephen Booth, chief executive saying, ""We have had three good performances out of four under Paul. I am confident in his abilities and hope everyone gets behind him."cite news|title=Holland appointed|date=2008-03-26|publisher=The Times (London)|pages=80] cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/mansfield_town/7312614.stm |title=Holland named Mansfield manager |date=2008-03-25|publisher=BBC Sport|accessdate=2008-07-16] However, he was unable to prevent Mansfield from being relegated from the Football League and in July 2008, he was sacked with immediate effect.
