La Seu d'Urgell is the capital of the comarca Alt Urgell, in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, Spain. It will be the capital or cocapital (with Puigcerdà or/and Tremp) of vegueria Alt Pirineu i Aran (High Pyrenees and Aran), the new regional structure of Catalonia. La Seu d'Urgell is the biggest city in the catalan Pyrenees.

It was once capital of the County of Urgell. It is the site of the Bishop of la Seu d'Urgell, one of the Andorra co-princes.

The city name come from the latin "villa Sedis" or "Sedes Urgelli" (Urgellet or Urgell is the historical territory and "Sedes" means that the town is the capital of the Bishop of Urgell. Santa Maria d'Urgell is the cathedral of the town from the 12th century.

The town is in the Segre valley and there are two rivers: the Valira and the Segre and you can see also the Cadí mountain range.
