Treaty of Hué (1883)

Treaty of Hué (1883)

The Treaty of Hué (or the Treaty of Protectorate) was signed on August 25, 1883 between the Emperor of Vietnam and representatives of the French Empire. Based on the terms of the accord, the Emperor of Vietnam recognized French imperial control over the regions of central and northern Vietnam, which became the protectorates of Annam and Tonkin. The accord aided the French in their attempts to acquire access to Chinese markets from the Tonkin region. This treaty was signed at the conclusion of the Harmond Convention.
