Miss Nepal/Hidden Treasure Miss Nepal (मिस नेपाल) beauty pageant is an annual event held in Kathmandu, Nepal. This pageant started in 1994. The winner of the event competes in Miss World, 1st runner up competes in Miss Earth and 2nd runner up competes in Miss International pageants respectively.^[1]

The Hidden Treasure Miss Nepal titleholders are: Malina Joshi as Miss Nepal World 2011, Anupama Aura Gurung as Miss Nepal Earth 2011, and Sarina Maskey as Miss International Nepal 2011.

International pageants

Miss Nepal has been participating in the Miss Asia Pacific pageant since 1994, starting with Ruby Rana; and in the Miss World pageant since 1997, starting with Jharana Bajracharya.

From 2004, the practice of choosing a single winner or "Miss Nepal" was changed to instead elect representatives to the different international pageants. As of 2004, the 2nd Runner Up is sent to the Miss Earth pageant, which is recognized as one of the three most prestigious beauty pageants in the world.^[2]

In 2002, the pageant was held in December which was after the Miss World 2002, hence the Miss Nepal 2002 winner, Malvika Subba missed the opportunity to represent Nepal in the Miss World pageant. From 2005, the practice of sending the 1st Runner Up to Miss Asia Pacific was abolished in favor of sending the 1st Runner Up for the Miss Earth Beauty Paegent. And since 2010, the 2nd Runner Up represents Nepal at Miss International beauty pageant.

Miss Nepal USA

The first ever Miss Nepal USA pageant was held in Pennsylvania, on July 2001. The contest was held during the annual convention held by The Association of Nepalese in Americas. After 10 years, the pageant has made a come back. The second round of the pageant was held in New York, on August 2011 and was organized by Gauri Malla.

The aim of these contests is to identify talented young women who can uphold Nepalese pride in an international platform.^[3]

Miss Nepal Hong Kong

Miss Nepal Hong Kong was replaced in 2005 by the name of Miss Talent Hunt HK. But from 2011, Miss Talent Hunt HK has been running it as an International Pageant but, it does also have Nepalese contestants including other nationalities as well.However, in this year of 2011, Miss.Nepal Hong Kong is back after a long 6 years.^[4]

Trivia

• Tallest Miss Nepal: Prerana Shah (Miss Nepal 2003 1st Runner Up) 5'11"(180 cm).
• Shortest Miss Nepal: Priti Sitoula (Miss Nepal 2003) & Payal Shakya both are 5'4"(163 cm).
• In 1997, there were two different contests. Miss World Nepal 1997 which Jharana Bajracharya won and was sent to Miss World 1997 and the Hidden Treasures Miss Nepal which was Neelima Gurung who went to Miss Asia Pacific 1997 but from 1998 the Winner goes to Miss World and the 1st Runner up goes to Miss Asia Pacific.
• In 2005 the 1st Runner Up Shavona Shrestha went to Miss Earth 2005 and the 2nd Runner Up Ayushma Pokharel went to Miss Earth 2006 because in 2006 Miss Nepal was not held.

Notes

• No contest was held in 2001 because of the Nepalese royal massacre.
• From 2010, Miss Nepal; second ruuner up will represent Nepal in Miss International.
• From 2011 onwards the names of the 3rd runner up and 4the runner up were revealed while announcing the names of the winners.
