Paulien Hogeweg

Paulien Hogeweg

Paulien Hogeweg is a theoretical biologist who has conducted pioneering work in a wide range of biological fields.

In 1978 she used the term bioinformatics to refer to the process of information integration in biological systems. [Hogeweg, P. and Hesper, B. (1978) Interactive instruction on population interactions. Comput Biol Med 8(4):319-27.] This includes both bioinformatic pattern analysis and bioinformatic processes (the processes that arise during biological interactions which give rise to biological patterns).

With respect to bioinformatic pattern analysis she developed a sequence alignment technique (Hogeweg & Hesper 1984). She also pioneered individual-based models in space in the early 80s, contributing to the field of artificial life.
