Violin Concerto (Ligeti)

Violin Concerto (Ligeti)

György Ligeti's Violin Concerto was written in 1992 for the violinist Saschko Gawriloff. The concerto is in five movements:

#Praeludium: Vivacissimo luminoso - attacca:
#Aria, Hoquetus, Choral: Andante con moto - attacca:
#Intermezzo: Presto fluido
#Passacaglia: Lento intenso
#Appassionato: Agitato molto

It is often considered one of Ligeti's finest works, and well represents his late style: a synthesis of avant-garde explorations and traditional melodic and formal conventions. The music relies heavily on clashing tuning systems and harmonics. The score calls for violin solo, 2 flutes (1st doubling alto flute and recorder, 2nd doubling piccolo and recorder), oboe (doubling ocarina), two clarinets (both doubling ocarinas), bassoon (doubling ocarina), 2 horns, trumpet, tenor trombone, 3 timpani, a large percussion section (played by two percussionists), including 2 suspended cymbals, crotales, tubular bells, swanee whistles, vibraphone, marimba, etc., and 10 string players.
