"Severity" is an upcoming first-person shooter being developed for Microsoft Windows and two console systems. Funded by the Cyberathlete Professional League's parent company, it is currently being developed by Escalation Studios and will blend different FPS gameplay styles, separating them as individual game-modes.

A closed beta for affiliated professional gamers will be followed by a public beta prior to a commercial launch.

The developers intend to make cross-platform gameplay with Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

It was announced by game developer John Romero on YouTube [youtube|xwE89BM7Nnw|John Romero announces Severity] .

Despite the Cyberathlete Professional League announcing that it was ceasing tournament operations on 13 March 2008, and then being acquired by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates on 25 August 2008, Tom Mustaine, the director of Escalation Studios, has said that the studio will continue to work on Severity, although it was not their main focus at the time.Cite web|url=http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1526433|title=Exclusive: CPL is dead, Severity is not|accessdate=2008-07-15|publisher=ESReality.com|year=2008]

In September of 2008 John Romero told "That Gaming Site" that Severity was canceled, but Tom Mustaine contacted the site to inform them the project was not canceled but in "stealth mode" citing John Romero was "let out of the loop".
