History

U.S. Route 241 was created in 1930, splitting from US 41 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and heading south to US 231 in Dothan, Alabama. In 1954, it was mostly renumbered to US 431, but the part north of Fayetteville, Tennessee became part of a northern extension of US 231, and a shorter route was taken between Anniston and Opelika.
