Newcastle bus routes connect suburbs in and around Newcastle, New South Wales. Services are largely integrated with the public transport network of Sydney, to the south, however the route numbering system is separate.

Newcastle is the second-largest city in New South Wales, serving as a regional centre for residents of the Central Coast, Hunter Valley and Great Lakes regions. Bus services within Newcastle are operated by Newcastle Buses & Ferries, a subsidiary of the State Transit Authority of New South Wales. Newcastle Buses & Ferries also operates a ferry service across Port Hunter between Newcastle's CBD and Stockton.

Newcastle is considered as one outer metropolitan bus region for the purposes of Ministry of Transport contracting arrangements.

Free City Buses

Trips within a designated area of the Newcastle CBD on State Transit-operated bus services are zero-fare under the Newcastle Alliance's Free City Buses programme. The zero-fare zone operates between 7.30 am and 6.00 pm, seven days a week. The programme receives funding from the Honeysuckle Development Corporation and the Government of New South Wales.

The zero-fare zone is bounded in the north by the Hunter River, in the east by the ocean, in the south by Church, Bull and King streets, and in the west by Stewart Avenue. Trips between the zone and the TAFE in Wickham are also zero-fare. [1]

Infrastructure

The network radiates from a bus terminus near CityRail's Newcastle station, in Scott St, temporarily located in Watt St. Buses park in a designated layover area adjacent to Newcastle Station, however passengers are not picked up or ste down in this area. Major interchanges are located at the University of Newcastle, Wallsend, Glendale, Warners Bay, Belmont, Charlestown, Westfield Kotara and Broadmeadow station. State Transit have depots at Hamilton, which opened as a tram depot in 1923 and Belmont, which opened in 1953. Both these locations stock timetables along with most major shopping centres. Lost property is able to be collected from Hamilton Depot.

To reduce journey times, bus-only lanes are in operation on:

  • Hunter Street at Newcastle West
  • Lambton Road at Broadmeadow and Lambton
  • Maitland Road at Tighes Hill near Newcastle TAFE
  • University Drive at Callaghan
  • Charlestown, near the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Charlestown Road
  • Pacific Highway at Jewells, Marks Point and Bennetts Green
