Sony Dwi Kuncoro (born July 7, 1984, Surabaya, Jawa Timur, Indonesia) is a male badminton player from Indonesia.

Personal life

When he was young, he joined the Suryanaga Surabaya badminton club. His parents are Moch. Sumadji (father) and Asmiati (mother). His hobbies are fixing automobiles and hanging-out or travelling. Generally people call him Sony, which can also be spelled as Soni.

Career

Major achievements

2004 Summer Olympics

Kuncoro played badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men's singles, defeating M. Roslin Hashim of Malaysia and Jim Ronny Andersen of Norway in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, Kuncoro defeated Park Tae-sang of Korea 15-13, 15-4. Kuncoro advanced to the semifinals, in which he lost to Shon Seung-mo of Korea 15-6, 9-15, 15-9. Playing in the bronze medal match, he defeated Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand by a score of 15-11, 17-16 for the bronze medal.

2007 IBF World Championships

He became runner up at the 2007 IBF World Championships after losing to Lin Dan in straight sets by a score of 11-21 and 20-22 in Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.

Other achievements

In September 23, 2007, Sony won the Chinese Taipei Open after beating Taufik Hidayat at the final round by 18-21, 21-6, 21-13. Sony has also 2 times winning men's single gold medal at SEA Games (2003, 2005). At SEA Games 2007, Sony help Indonesian team won gold medal men's team event. In June 22, 2008, Sony won the Indonesian Super Series after beating Simon Santoso at the final round by 19-21, 21-14, 21-9 in Istora Senayan, Jakarta. In Sunday, 21 September 2008 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Sony won the Japan Super Series after beating Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia with straight sets 21-17, 21-11 in 40 minits at the final round. In Sunday, 28 September 2008 at Changzhou Olympic Sports Center, he was succesfully won the China Masters Super Series after beating Chen Jin from China with straight sets 21-19 21-18 at the final round and became first men singles player in the world who won the super series tournament three times consecutive after won in the Indonesian Super Series, Japan Super Series and last China Masters Super Series.
